Music with Emma

My name is Emma Saint-Laurent, I am a former student of the Conservatory and I am now pursuing my law degree at the University of Sherbrooke. My favorite instrument has been the piano since 2008. I played the violin during my first year of music at the Conservatory, with the primary motivation of following in the footsteps of my older brother. However, I quickly developed an interest and a curiosity for the piano, and thanks to the flexibility of my parents, I changed from violin to piano during my second year and I have been fulfilled ever since!

My musical journey

Having started quite young, at 5 years old, I was recently asked at what age you should start introducing your children to music. I answer to this that from a very young age it is possible to start playing an instrument and to dive into the musical world. Indeed, with the right supervision and a teacher who adapts to the needs, objectives and personality of the child, I am convinced that it can never be too early! It is important to take lessons with a musician with whom you will feel comfortable and whose time you will appreciate the hour spent in class each week. I believe that makes all the difference in wanting to keep playing, year after year, while maintaining the will to improve. I cannot ignore the fact that this person was for me Céline Barrière, who made me want to come back to her place every week. In addition, starting young allows children to be introduced to an activity that requires autonomy and discipline, which also allows them to develop a great sense of accomplishment.

What my musical journey has brought me

I would add that the musical training of the Conservatory is significant in all aspects of life. It is not only a complete musical training on the practical and theoretical side but also being proficient on an instrument is an extremely enriching experience. It gives access to whole new world , filled with creativity and without limits as to the different possible avenues. It creates the possibility of escaping into music on all occasions as soon as the notes begin to be heard!

An art worth maintaining

Having now undertaken studies to have a career in the legal industry, sadly, I no longer take lessons at the Conservatory but after all these years, I still continue to play on a regular basis when I pass by my piano in the living room. It is an art that I want to maintain and it brings me a lot of good. The only sacrifice to be made is to accept having permanently short nails! I can tell you that the sacrifice is worth it…
